Cyborg made some very good fighters in Shayna Baszler, Gina Carano, and Marloes Coenen, appear grossly outmatched.

While she's an excellent fighter, she's also just flat out bigger than Baszler and Coenen. Carano didn't really look grossly outmatched against Cyborg, she did decently standing up and had several moments when she ended up in mount (and then made the horrible mistake of standing up). My opinion on that fight is that Carano ran out of gas - it was after all her first ever fight with 5 minute rounds - and quit.

Baszler and Coenan make 135 easily, Cyborg struggles with 145. It's hardly a surprise she outmuscled these two.

I just re-watched Carano vs Cyborg and while Gina did have a couple of mildly rousing moments, it really did nothing to deter the wrecking ball that was Cyborg. The fact that Cyborg could make those mistakes (sloppy take down attempts, giving Gina full mount) and get away with them speaks volumes. Less than one minute into the fight the commentators made the remark "Carano in trouble" as she covered up, with her back against the cage as Cyborg unloaded with punches. By the end, Gina had absorbed a lot of punishment. Although a lot of her strikes were blocked, the arms/shoulders aren't a magical force-field for deflecting strikes, they still hurt and take their toll. She may have been gassed, but she was obviously plain "beaten up" as well.

On fight night, Cyborg probably had a slight weight advantage over Baszler/Coenen, but I don't think it was massively significant to the point where you can point to the outcome being determined by it. As far as I know, Coenen has fought many times at 145, it's a weight she's comfortable with. She's fought and beaten bigger girls than Cyborg. In fact I remember a youtube vid of her beating a huge girl (over 200lbs). Cyborg fought Baszler at 140 - and made weight. So Baszler only 5lbs above her natural weight class. Look at Penn/MacDonald to see a recent example of a visible weight class between fighters. Cyborg's advantage is very tame by comparison. Gina Carano is far more guilty of duffing up smaller girls (see her fight with Rosi Sexton).

Personally I still hope Cyborg can find a way to be a part of the UFC's women's division, although she is a bit too big for 135. Maybe she could return to fight in Invicta (Julia Budd springs to mind as a possible opponent) in 2013 and then if her & Ronda continue their winning ways, the UFC could set up a superfight @ 140 or 145 between Ronda and Cyborg by the end of the year or early 2014.

It's fair to say there is something of a drug problem in MMA right now. Too many high level fighters falling foul and I'm aware in many cases athletes can be quite naive as to what their coaches/trainers are supplementing them with, so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt - once.

Dana White Says Fighters Absolutely Turned Down Fight With Ronda Rousey – "That's a Fact"
Posted on December 16, 2012 by Damon Martin

Sometimes MMA can be a serious game of "he said, she said".

This time around that's literally the truth when it comes to the opponents who did or didn't turn down the opportunity to face UFC women's bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey at UFC 157.

Both Rousey and UFC President Dana White revealed last weekend upon the announcement of her fight against Liz Carmouche, that only she stepped up to the plate and asked for the fight while other notable competitors turned it down.

Two names in particular were mentioned – former Strikeforce women's champion Miesha Tate and former Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann.

Within days of the news that they had supposedly turned down the fight, both took up in their own defense and denied that they had ever been offered the shot at Rousey, much less turned it down.

Dana White's not buying it however, and says there's nothing wrong with turning down a fight against Rousey, he gets it, but don't lie about it and say you weren't offered the shot.

"Ronda Rousey is a bad ass, she's the champ, her opponent stepped up to the plate and wanted this fight with her when others didn't, I don't give a (expletive) what they say. That's a fact," White said on Saturday night following the TUF 16 finale.

Speaking specifically about McMann's claim that she was never offered the fight, White says he respects her decision to turn down the bout against Rousey, but he's not backing down on the fact that she was offered the fight and she said "thanks, but no thanks".

"She's definitely one of the girls that's going to be in it, but she said she didn't say it, but she said it. She wants a fight or two before she fights Ronda Rousey, nothing to be embarrassed about, Ronda Rousey's nasty. You want a couple fights before you fight her? That's no big deal," White said about McMann.

"But don't walk around talking (expletive) that you didn't say it, when you did say it."

Currently, Rousey vs. Carmouche is the only women's fight scheduled in the UFC, but more bouts are likely to be announced in the coming weeks. When and where McMann or Tate fit in is still to be determined.

No one knows the true facts so I'm not speculating, but good to see Dana White has come around to WMMA in general. I think UFC 157 will sell a lot of PPVs.

Don't know if anyone has posted this before, but this is a funny ding-dong catfight between Miesha Tate and Tara LaRosa on a radio talkshow, recorded back in March 2011.

LaRosa accuses Tate of using steroids, challenges her to come to her gym and settle it.

Things get particularly amusing in part 2 when the interviewer thinks Miesha is Tara and Tara is Miesha.  :lmao:

Marloes Coenen doesn't look like she's all that likely to be in the mix for a UFC bout any time soon - she's off to fight in Dream against Fiona Muxlow (who?). Link!

Also, Tara LaRosa thinks Ronda Rousey should fight Coenen or Sara McMann.

"Rowdy" Rousey is the top-ranked female bantamweight MMA fighter in the world and the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in judo.

Interviewed October 13, 2012

I've been broke as fuck, but I've never owed anyone shit.

Happiness is the absence of wants.

My father would say, "Ronnie, you're going to be someone special. Whatever it is that you want to do, you're going to be the best in the world at it." He said it to me when I was at that age where your dad is right about everything. So I just assumed that he was.

People have been fighting each other for millennia. It's part of human nature. The confusing thing is we now live in a society where it's not illegal to be an asshole, but it's illegal to slap one.

I love fighting. It's preserving something that's real, that I think is trying to be crushed out of society. And I think it's the safest way that we can keep it. People need to hold on to their sanity somehow.

Reality TV is set up to make people entertaining. A good person with values and principles is not good television.

At home, I watch fights and documentaries — that's it. If it's not about the birth and death of stars, Frozen Planet, or someone getting punched in the face, I'm probably not watching it.

People say to me all the time, "You have no fear." I tell them, "No, that's not true. I'm scared all the time. You have to have fear in order to have courage. I'm a courageous person because I'm a scared person."

I've been arm-barred. I've been arm-barred and I let my arm be broken, and I didn't tap, and I got out, and I still won that fight. Fuck 'em. I don't care. An arm bar isn't the end for me. The ligaments in both my elbows are so loose my arms just dislocate sometimes, just randomly. Because I've experienced it, I don't fear it at all. It's the people who haven't been arm-barred who have that fear.

Since becoming a sex symbol, I haven't had less sex in my life.

It's really funny, actually. I either get men coming up to me like, "Oh, my God, baby, I love you!" or else they're too shy to approach me. Can I get just a little in between?

Hell no, I ain't gonna hook up with no fighter. I know these guys. They're like a sewing circle and everyone tells everyone everything.

Tweeting can really make you think about what you wanna say.
You spit something out and you're like, Damn, I'm eight characters over. What other words can I use that won't change the meaning?

When I left judo and went into MMA, everyone was saying, "How's she gonna react to getting punched in the face?" And I was thinking, You don't understand. In judo, those girls would punch you straight in the face all the time. They'd pretend to go for a grip and just punch you. Grab you by the collar and hit you over and over again. If you watch the fight I lost at the Olympics, you'll see that girl punched me in the face twenty times. I know what it's like to get punched in the face. At this point, I'm conditioned to ignore it. I don't skip a beat.

I speak really, really fast because the people in my family all had very interesting things to say, and so I learned to say what I want to say loud and reallyfast because that's the only way I was gonna break in and be heard.

For me, MMA is like speed chess. It's like I'm herding a person into a certain position. Say my endgame is an arm bar. I'm not gonna actually take you and put you there. What I'm going to do is convince you that it's a good idea to move in the direction I want you to go. And I'm going to keep on funneling you down until you've been narrowed to the option of tap or not.

I'm not creative enough to be a good liar.

i dont know jack about muxlow but her list of opponents is... unimpressive.  DREAM feeding random intimidating looking can-crushers to its stars? PRIDE NEVER DIE :P

i assume Coenen isnt bothered with making 135lbs anymore...?
